What to wear to a yacht party in Dubai

There is no formal dress code on a private charter in Dubai, but there is one real rule: flat shoes or bare feet. Everything else is smart-casual resort wear — a dress or linen shirt over swimwear, sunglasses, and a layer for after sunset between November and March.

The shoe rule is the only rule

Heels are the one genuine mistake. They mark teak decks, they are unstable on a moving boat, and most crews will politely ask you to take them off before you step aboard. Bring them in a bag if you are going on somewhere afterwards.

Most people end up barefoot within ten minutes. If you want something on your feet, boat shoes, flat sandals or plain trainers with a light sole all work. Anything with a dark rubber sole can leave marks.

What people actually wear

The honest answer is swimwear with something over it. A charter is not an evening out — you are outdoors, in sun, with a swim stop halfway through, and clothes that cannot get wet spend the afternoon being protected rather than worn.

  • Women: swimsuit or bikini with a kaftan, linen dress or shirt over it
  • Men: swim shorts and a linen or cotton shirt, unbuttoned
  • Sunglasses that will survive being dropped, and a hat that stays on in wind
  • A cover-up you can put on when the sun gets high, which it will
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — there is far more sun on the water than on land

What changes in winter

From late November through February, the deck after sunset is genuinely cool — low twenties with wind over the water, which feels colder than the same temperature ashore. Everyone underestimates this and someone always ends up in a borrowed towel.

Bring one warm layer per person for any charter that runs past sunset. A sweatshirt is enough. The rest of the day is the same as summer.

For a photographed occasion

For a birthday shoot, a proposal or a brand day, solid colours photograph better than patterns against the sea and the towers, and light fabrics move well in the wind. White works in daylight and disappears at sunset, which is worth knowing if the photographs matter.

The other practical note: whatever you wear, you will get spray on it at some point. Silk is a poor choice on a boat, however good it looks.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is there a dress code on a yacht in Dubai?
Not on a private charter. The only firm rule is no heels — they damage teak decks and are unsafe on a moving boat. Beyond that, smart-casual resort wear over swimwear is what almost everyone wears.
What should I wear to a yacht party?
Swimwear with a kaftan, linen dress or open shirt over it, flat shoes or bare feet, sunglasses and a hat. Add one warm layer if the charter runs past sunset between November and March.
Can you wear heels on a yacht?
No. Heels mark teak decks and are genuinely unsafe when the boat moves. Bring them in a bag if you are going somewhere afterwards, and travel barefoot or in flat soles on board.
Do you need to bring a towel?
Towels are provided on every charter along with the swim gear. Bring your own only if you want something specific.
