What not to bring on a yacht

Leave behind heels, open flames of any kind including cake candles, confetti and glitter, anything thrown overboard, and unlicensed alcohol. Heels damage teak and are unsafe; the rest are either a fire risk, a marine-pollution offence, or a legal problem. Everything else — food, cake, decoration, speakers — is fine and encouraged.

The short version

  • Heels are the one crews stop at the gangway. They mark teak and are unstable.
  • No open flames at all — that includes candles on a cake. Sparklers are usually fine.
  • Nothing goes over the side, including biodegradable confetti and petals.
  • Alcohol needs prior arrangement and a licensed source. Do not just turn up with it.

The eight things to leave at home

None of these are arbitrary house rules. Each one is either a safety issue, a legal one, or a repair bill somebody has to pay.

  • Heels — they mark teak decks and are genuinely unsafe on a moving boat
  • Candles and any open flame, including on a cake — sparkler candles are usually fine
  • Confetti, glitter and petals — nothing goes over the side, biodegradable or not
  • Fireworks and flares of any kind
  • Unlicensed alcohol — needs prior arrangement and a licensed source
  • Glass, where you can avoid it — a broken bottle on a deck ends the swim stop
  • Anything inflatable and unsecured — it goes over the side in the first gust
  • More guests than the licence allows — the hardest one, and non-negotiable

Why nothing goes over the side

Marine littering is an offence in UAE waters and the enforcement is real. That includes confetti, flower petals, paper lanterns and anything else that feels harmless because it is small or biodegradable.

For a wedding or a proposal this catches people out, because petals over the water is a shot people have in mind. It cannot happen. Petals on the deck are fine, and the crew will sweep them up afterwards.

The guest count, which is the real one

Every item above is a conversation. The licensed guest number is not. It counts everybody physically aboard — children, infants, a photographer, a DJ, catering staff — and a captain who exceeds it is operating outside the vessel's licence and insurance.

A crew turning somebody away on the pontoon is the worst five minutes of anybody's day and it is entirely avoidable by giving the real number when you book. If your group is close to a limit, say so and get moved up a size.

What you should bring

Sunscreen, a hat that stays on in wind, sunglasses you do not mind losing, and a layer if the charter runs past sunset between November and March. Your own food and soft drinks, which are free on every boat and every charter.

Send a cake and decoration ahead the day before if you can. Carrying a boxed cake down a pontoon in a crosswind is a bad way to start.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is not allowed on a yacht in Dubai?
Heels, open flames including cake candles, fireworks, confetti and glitter, anything thrown over the side, and unlicensed alcohol. Guest numbers above the vessel licence are the one absolute — a captain cannot make an exception.
Can you have candles on a cake on a boat?
No — open flames are not permitted on deck. Sparkler candles are usually acceptable and crews will tell you what their vessel allows. Send the cake ahead the day before if you can.
Why is confetti banned on boats in Dubai?
Marine littering is an offence in UAE waters and it applies to biodegradable confetti and flower petals as much as anything else. Petals on the deck are fine; nothing goes over the side.
Can you wear shoes on a yacht?
Flat soles, boat shoes or bare feet. Heels are the one thing crews will stop at the gangway — they mark teak decks and are unstable on a moving boat. Bring them in a bag if you are going on somewhere after.
What should you bring on a Dubai yacht charter?
Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a warm layer if the charter runs past sunset in winter, and your own food and soft drinks, which are free on any boat. Towels, water, ice, snorkels and life jackets are already aboard.
