The part that goes wrong on land is logistics — the cake arriving early, the decoration going up in front of the person it is for, the photographer missing the moment. On a boat all of that is fixable because we load everything before you board and the crew know when the cake comes out.
Tell us what the birthday is: a sixteenth with twenty friends, a fortieth with a dozen couples, a first birthday where half the guests are asleep by four. Those are three completely different charters and the boat, the hours and the route should not be the same for each.
Three hours is the right default. It gives you an hour running out and settling, an hour at anchor for swimming and food, and an hour coming back with the towers lit — which is when the cake works best.

Worth knowing
