Can you drink alcohol on a yacht in Dubai?

Yes, on boats that permit it and by prior arrangement. UAE law applies on the water exactly as on land: alcohol must come from a licensed supply, it is served rather than sold on most charter boats, and public intoxication is an offence. No vessel operating in Sharjah serves alcohol at all.

What is actually permitted

Dubai permits alcohol consumption by adults in licensed venues and in private, and a private charter falls closer to the second than the first. In practice that means a charter operator either holds an arrangement with a licensed supplier, or agrees in advance that you may bring your own. Both are normal; neither is automatic.

What is not permitted anywhere is buying alcohol from an unlicensed source, drinking in public before or after the charter, or being visibly intoxicated on the pontoon. The pontoon is public. The boat, once you are aboard and away, is not.

Ask before you book, not after

Whether your particular boat permits alcohol depends on the vessel owner as much as on the law, and operators differ. Ask at the enquiry stage and get the answer in writing. An operator who is vague about it is telling you something.

Where it is permitted, the practical routes are: bar service arranged through the operator with a licensed supply and staff, or you bringing your own by prior written agreement. Charging guests per drink is a licensing question and is not something a charter boat generally does.

  • Bar service arranged by the operator — licensed supply, staff, agreed menu
  • Bring your own, by prior written agreement — the common route on smaller boats
  • Never: unlicensed supply, drinking on the pontoon, selling drinks to guests

Where it is not allowed at all

Sharjah is a dry emirate and that applies to boats operating there as fully as it does to restaurants ashore. No dhow, charter yacht or dinner cruise in Sharjah serves alcohol, regardless of what is arranged elsewhere in the UAE.

Most traditional dhow dinner cruises in Dubai also do not serve alcohol, including on the Creek and Marina routes. Modern catamarans and floating restaurants are more often licensed. If wine matters to your evening, check before booking rather than at the buffet.

During Ramadan

Rules tighten during Ramadan and hours change. Some licensed venues suspend service during fasting hours and operators adjust accordingly. Ask specifically about your date if it falls in Ramadan; the answer is not the same as the rest of the year.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can you drink alcohol on a yacht in Dubai?
Yes, on boats that permit it and by prior arrangement, with alcohol from a licensed supply. UAE law applies on the water as on land. Ask at the enquiry stage and get the answer in writing, because it varies by vessel and by operator.
Can you bring your own alcohol on a charter boat in Dubai?
On many boats, yes, by prior written agreement with the operator. It must come from a licensed source. Do not assume it is allowed and turn up with it — confirm first.
Do dhow cruises in Dubai serve alcohol?
Most do not, including the traditional Creek and Marina dinner dhows. Modern catamarans and floating restaurants are more often licensed. Where alcohol is available it is charged separately and is never in the ticket price.
Is alcohol allowed on boats in Sharjah?
No. Sharjah is a dry emirate and no vessel operating there serves or permits alcohol, on any cruise or charter.
What happens if someone drinks too much on a charter?
The captain can end the charter and return to the berth, and no refund is due. Public intoxication is an offence in the UAE, and the walk from the boat back to the car park is public.
