How many charter hours do you actually need?

Three hours is the right answer for most people. Two hours covers the Marina channel, JBR and Bluewaters but cannot anchor. Three adds a forty-minute swim stop off the Palm. Four lets you eat aboard properly, and five reaches the World Islands. On a 48ft those cost AED 1,500, 2,250, 3,000 and 3,750.

The short version

  • 2 hours — Marina, JBR, Bluewaters. No swim stop. AED 1,500 on a 48ft.
  • 3 hours — adds a 40-minute anchor stop off the Palm. AED 2,250. The default.
  • 4 hours — enough to eat aboard without rushing. AED 3,000.
  • 5 hours — reaches the World Islands, 45 minutes offshore. AED 3,750.

Why two hours cannot include swimming

Charter time runs berth to berth. Clearing the Marina channel takes about twelve minutes at the low speed the channel requires, and coming back in takes the same. That is nearly half an hour of a two-hour charter spent inside the harbour before anything else happens.

Anchoring properly — finding the spot, setting the anchor, getting the ladder down, getting everyone back aboard and stowed — is a twenty-minute overhead around however long you actually spend in the water. Two hours does not have room for it, which is why the crew will decline rather than rush it.

What the third hour buys

The best forty minutes of the day, for AED 750. The boat anchors in the flat water behind the Palm Jumeirah crescent, the engines go off, and the whole character of the charter changes — it stops being a tour and becomes an afternoon.

If you are choosing between a bigger boat for two hours and a smaller boat for three, take the three hours. Almost nobody regrets it and a great many people regret the opposite.

  • 2 hours — sightseeing only, under way throughout
  • 3 hours — one swim stop of about 40 minutes. The most-booked shape
  • 4 hours — swim stop plus a proper meal aboard, unhurried
  • 5 hours — the World Islands, 45 minutes offshore each way
  • 8 hours — full day, or an offshore fishing charter

When two hours is genuinely right

For a sunset charter, where the light window is only about forty minutes wide and the point is the timing rather than the swimming. For client hosting, where two hours is the attention you have. For a first time on the water with someone unsure about boats. And for a couple, where AED 1,500 for two hours is already AED 750 each.

In every one of those cases, adding an hour adds cost without adding much. In most other cases it is the cheapest improvement available.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How many hours should a yacht charter be in Dubai?
Three hours for most people — enough for the Marina, the Palm and a forty-minute swim stop, at AED 2,250 on a 48ft. Two hours works for a sunset run or client hosting but cannot include swimming.
Can you swim on a two-hour yacht charter?
No. Clearing the Marina channel takes about twelve minutes each way, and anchoring adds a twenty-minute overhead. Two hours has no room for it, so crews will not attempt it.
How long does it take to reach the Palm from Dubai Marina?
About twenty minutes at cruising speed. A three-hour charter reaches the Palm, anchors for forty minutes and comes back without hurrying.
How long do you need to reach the World Islands?
Five hours. The archipelago is about four kilometres offshore, which is forty to forty-five minutes each way, leaving a long anchor stop in the middle. Four hours reaches it but turns straight round.
Is the minimum charter length the same on every boat?
No. Two hours on the 48ft and 55ft, three on the 62ft and four on the 85ft. The minimum is set by the boat rather than by the day of the week.
