Are there sharks in Dubai waters?

Yes, but not the ones people mean. The Arabian Gulf off Dubai holds whale sharks, blacktip reef sharks and various small bottom-dwelling species, all of which are harmless to swimmers. Shark attacks in UAE waters are effectively unheard of, and swimming from a charter boat carries no meaningful shark risk.

The short version

  • Whale sharks and blacktip reef sharks are the species you might actually see.
  • Whale sharks are filter feeders — the largest fish in the sea and entirely harmless.
  • The Gulf is shallow and warm, which does not suit the large predatory species.
  • The real hazards when swimming here are sun, currents and boat traffic.

What is actually out there

The Arabian Gulf is shallow — averaging around 35 metres — very warm and very saline, which is a difficult environment for large pelagic predators. What it does support is smaller reef and bottom-dwelling species, plus seasonal visitors.

The one worth hoping for is the whale shark. They pass through Gulf waters, most often between April and September, and they are filter feeders: the largest fish in the sea, with no interest in and no capacity to harm a swimmer. Seeing one from a charter is rare and is the kind of thing crews remember for years.

Blacktip reef sharks are more common and generally under two metres. They are shy and leave the area when people arrive.

  • Whale shark — seasonal, filter feeder, entirely harmless
  • Blacktip reef shark — common, small, shy
  • Various carpet and bottom-dwelling sharks — harmless, rarely seen
  • Rays are far more commonly sighted than sharks off Dubai

What the actual risks are when swimming

Sun is first, by a distance. Two hours on a swim platform in Dubai burns people who would not burn in an entire European afternoon, and the reflection off the water doubles the exposure.

Then boat traffic. This is a busy coast, and the reason charters anchor in specific sheltered spots rather than wherever looks nice is that the crew know where the traffic runs. Swimming away from the boat is the thing crews actually worry about.

Then currents, which are modest inside the Palm crescent and stronger in open water. Jellyfish appear occasionally and are a nuisance rather than a danger.

Where charters anchor, and why it is safe

The two standard anchorages are behind the Palm Jumeirah crescent and among the World Islands. Both are sheltered, both are away from the shipping lanes, and both are shallow enough to see the bottom on a clear day.

Crews put the ladder down, stay on deck while people are in the water, and ask that nobody swims beyond the stern. That is standard practice everywhere and it is about traffic and currents, not about sharks.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Are there sharks in Dubai?
Yes — whale sharks, blacktip reef sharks and several small bottom-dwelling species live in or pass through Gulf waters off Dubai. All are harmless to swimmers, and shark attacks in UAE waters are effectively unheard of.
Is it safe to swim off a boat in Dubai?
Yes. Charters anchor in sheltered spots behind the Palm crescent or among the World Islands, away from shipping lanes. The real hazards are sun, boat traffic and currents rather than marine life.
Can you see whale sharks in Dubai?
Occasionally, most often between April and September. They are filter feeders and completely harmless. Sightings are rare enough that crews remember them, so it is not something to plan a charter around.
Are there jellyfish in Dubai?
Occasionally, usually in warmer months and usually in patches rather than everywhere. They are a nuisance rather than a danger. Crews will move the anchorage if a swim stop turns out to be in a patch.
Has there ever been a shark attack in the UAE?
Incidents are effectively unheard of. The Gulf's shallow, warm, highly saline water does not suit the large predatory species associated with attacks elsewhere.
